There's a Reason Why Vonage Is #1
There's a reason why Vonage is the #1 VoIP internet phone company in the market right now. Although you'd think that there are better, cheaper alternatives, in this case, VoIP *IS* the alternative to begin with to Verizon and other landline telephone lines.
My Verizon landline phone bill comes out to about $41-42 each month. My Vonage line costs me about $18 each month -- which is more than 1/2 off, plus I get more features, including free calls which would be charged if I use our Verizon home phone line.
My suggestion is to start a 2nd phone line with VoIP by signing up for Vonage. After a month or two, if you feel comfortable enough, you can cut the cord of your Verizon telephone line -- there really isn't that much need for a traditional landline phone company anymore.
One big tip with VoIP is to have the phone line plugged into your NID (Network Interface Device) - the grey little box outside your home where the Verizon phone lines currently come in. By doing this, you'll light up all the phone jacks in your house with the Vonage VoIP dial tone and no one will know the difference in the house -- you can use all your existing telephone sets, cordless phones, etc as-is.
