Blockbuster $5 Coupon For Total Access Members

Yet another reason why Blockbuster Total Access is better than NetFlix -- Blockbuster Video keeps throwing more freebies to members. Not only do you get double the number of video rentals per month plus a free game rental, I just got this email from Blockbuster:

Blockbuster has long used their website for one-time printable coupons. This is yet another way to save more at the store.

At the store, they now have a cool promo locall too -- $5.99 for 30 days and you get a free candy/treat every time you go. Since they are priced from $1 to $3 each usually for a Twizzler, Popcorn, Chocolate covered pretzels, gummy bears, mentos, etc, if you go to the store just once a week, this is a great deal.

I have no clue how Blockbuster aims to make a profit with their Total Access DVD Rental Program . . . especially when they have plans for only $5.99/month after the free trial. But until it's gone, you might as well ride the wave.

Where is the Amazon mp3 Music Download Service?

Yesterday's Wall Street Journal article really caught my eye. The article, "Music ServiceFrom AmazonTakes On iTunes" covered the hype over the iTunes killer announced by Amazon this week. There were rumblings that Jeff Bezos was courting the music industry several months ago, trying to piece together this ultimate business model - selling digital content that millions of iPod users could use - mp3 music downloads. mp3's are the perfect product - no inventory, immediate revenue, easy fulfillment, unlimited stock of each product, small file sizes which translate to fast downloads and a great user experience.

Hype can be hype, so I tried to see for myself if Amazon really has a chance over Apple's iTunes.com, but I couldn't find it at all.

Where is Amazon's mp3 Music Download Service you ask? The answer: they "PLAN" to do it, it's not available yet! That's now "news," that's the future! What about now? today?

Here's some things that are relevant to you TODAY:

  • Amazon "announced it" not "opened the store to the public": Every song and album in the Amazon.com digital music store will eventually be available exclusively in the MP3 format without digital rights management (DRM) software. But NO date is set for this service. It's a PLANNED service, not a reality yet!

  • Amazon.com Does Offers Free Music Downloads TODAY: Don't be fooled by the limited offerings on the "Free Music Downloads" page. USE THE SEARCH FEATURE to find music tracks you can download. TIP: search for category of music (jazz, christian, rock, etc) or artist or keywords (like instruments, genre, etc).

  • As the WSJ states, just like Amazon's announced service, "eMusic sells only MP3s that are almost universally playable" which means any iPod and all other mp3 players. By the way, eMusic has the largest number of subscribers for it's type of online music service.

  • The Wall Street Journal also pointed out that "eMusic. . .can work out to as little as 25 cents a song". If you want to save as much as 75% off Apple's prices for mp3 songs with less restrictions than iTunes yet can still be used with iPods, try eMusic.

  • eMusic gives you free credits for your choice of 25 free mp3 songs to download immediately.

Just like the old commercial shouting the urgency, "I want my MTV!". I want my MP3...TODAY, not next year.

Stunned by Prices of Stunning Real Art

After moving into a new home, it takes awhile to set it up the way you want, reflecting the real you. One of the last things to take care of for us has been the walls. Because it's so personal, anything you hang on the wall is highly visible, and usually is a larger investment than say picture frames for a bookshelf, or a vase for flowers, etc. And if you want to invest in real art, the perception has been that it's really expensive.

Once you have to hit the wallet big-time, it's easy for inertia to take over. We've been looking at real art casually whenever we pass an art gallery or crafts fair. Recently, we purchased a beautifully framed original oil painting that was pre-framed in a astonishing gold leafed frame at a church fundraising evening. It goes so beautifully over our piano right now.

And since then we've been energized to find other original real art pieces to decorate other parts of the house. The problem is how to find not only the time, but places where they have a large inventory of art to view. Some of these mall stores have original art, but many times they are cheap reproductions and overpriced becuase of the mall rent for the store.

www.BeautifulRealArt.com offers an alternative to acquiring real art locally. This sponsored site actually sells a variety of art such as oil paintings, acrylic & watercolor paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and pottery. Here are some interesting facets of this company:

  • They sell only original real art, not reproductions, posters, etc.

  • They stock everything they sell. There's no need for contracts, worries about consignment fulfillment, etc.

  • They offer free FedEx shipping on all fine art purchases

  • They have a $200 or less category for 'newbie' art buyers

  • They also offer gift certificates, which can be a very unique gift for someone you love.

Video Slideshows & Home Movies for Dummies

One of the best things I've done with all the digital photos and video clips that I've taken with my Sony digital camera is to make video slide shows using Microsoft PhotoStory. It's a very easy program that allows you to import photos, re-arrange the order, set-up transitions between each photo, add titles, import mp3 music files for a sound track and set-up zoom/pan movement within each photo during the video. It also allows me to burn the finished product to a DVD to share with others after buying an additional $20 plug-in DVD burning plug-in specifically for that program.

I consistently get ooohs and ahhhhs whenever we show them to friends or family. Everyone wants to know how to do it themselves. The problem is that everyone is a little bit lazy, and there is a learning curve when it comes to all things technical.

Here's one attempt to solve that. Digital video slide show for Dummies: OneTrueMedia. The site allows you to upload photos from your PC, and then it auto-creates a video slide show for you with some basic razzle dazzle elements. If you are daring enough the service gives you more control to customize each part just like with the "manual" process I described above.
You can also order DVD's from them or photobooks too.

One really neat thing about OneTrueMedia is that you can also share any of the creations online through YouTube, GoogleVideo, etc and here's an exclusive feature that may be worth it for you to try them out: Anyone with a Tivo (like grandparents) worldwide can automatically find your latest video slide show on their "NOW PLAYING" menu and just watch your video just like any other of their recorded TV shows on the Tivo.

This is one service that is trying to break that inertia & "dummies" barrier for the millions of people that have digital photos and video clips "held hostage" in their cameras and hard drives.

If you've try it out, why not share your experience via the comments section?

What if You CANNOT Hear Me Now?

One of the biggest problems with certain cell phone carriers is coverage. It's the most frustrating thing if you can't get a signal to make a call when you pull out your phone.

What's doubly frustrating? If your cell phone, potentally issued to you by your company, doesn't get a good signal -- or NO signal -- in your own home. That's the worst, huh? Up till now, the only option you had was to spew negative comments about your cell phone company to everyone you know whenever it comes up in conversation (is that a good phone? Do you like ___INSERT Verizon, Cingular, Sprint, Nextel, etc HERE)____??) -- and I'm sure it comes up in conversation more often that you want.

Now, there's finally another solution for you: Boost Your Cell Phone Signal At Home!

How? Designed for consumers, there's a gadget called the zBoost cell phone signal booster which basically amplifies cellular signals for single or multiple users in homes or offices.

NOTE: This is a great solution for all phones EXCEPT Nextel...

It works with cell phones on Cingular (AT&T Wireless), Verizon, Alltel, CellularOne, Liberty Wireless, T-Mobile, etc. The package includes everything you need -- amplifier base unit, power supply, base unit antenna, low-loss SATV coaxial cable (RG-6), signal antenna and mounting hardware. The omni-directional antennas are easy to orient and receive from multiple cell towers.

Just set it up and forget it. If you can install a cable modem or router, you can install this with no problem. Your cell phone should receive a boost of at least a bar or two. The best impact is for zones where you may have a VERY weak signal around your house or you experience a lot of dropped calls, but in your house you're basically dead without a cell phone signal. < This product will give you a signal to receive and make calls.

After you install this, everyone can hear you now!

Smaller is Better for this MicroSD Card for the price & size

This offer is so small you might miss it - literally. Here's a 1 GB MicroSD Card (with regular SD card adapter included) from Kingston for only $11 - $5 rebate = $6.00 after rebate! Perfect for your Samsung Blackjack - even if you already have one, at this price a spare is great to have.

This is the perfect way to transfer ringtones, mp3 files, phone numbers etc back and forth between your PC and Blackjack cell phone. Or even between two different phones.

This thing is TINY. Really TINY. 0.43” x 0.59” x .039” (yes, that's less than 1/2 inch). In fact, it's very easy to loose, so when you're taking it out or putting it in the MicroSD card slot in your cell phone, you should really do it on a surface that is light in color so you can find it just in case it jumps out of your hands.

SIX BUCKS for a 1GB MicroSD CARD. THAT'S A HUGE DEAL FOR SUCH A SMALL THING.

ATM's are the Enemy. Get Free Stuff Just for Paying.

It amazes me sometimes when I stand in line at the cashier and someone in front of me pulls out a wad of cash to pay for their purchase. Sometimes the total on the register is $400-500 or even more like the last time I was in Home Depot. The guy in front of me had a big fat wallet with a bunch of credit cards, but instead, he hands over five $100 bills to pay for the Weber Grill.

If he manages his cashflow like this, he must be paying for tons of stuff in cold cash. That's a big no-no!

If you have the cash flow, you should really get a credit card that gives you point and also gives you a float for 30 days till payment is due. What's more, if you choose your credit cards wisely, you'll get extra benefits like breakage & theft protection, warranties will be extended -- sometimes even doubled in length, all for free.

One of my favorite cards in my wallet is the Starwood American Express. It gives you tons of points which turns out to be more than 4-5% value if you use them right. And just off the bat, if you cash in 20,000 points, you can convert it into a free 25,000 point airline ticket on any major airline -- that's 5,000 points free. There's other bonus type scenarios in the Starwood program that really makes it worthwhile. Not to mention the standard array of American Express benefits like rental car insurance coverage, accidental breakage protection (great if you have kids!), and more.

American Express You also have the ability to get extra cards on your account so you can separate out different categories of spending or by person. The end-of-year statement which is broken down in different ways on paper is great for taxes -- just hand it over to the accountant and they have details of your tax-deductible items.

For me, it's definitely a card worth carrying in the wallet. I bet that guy at home depot in line in front of me could get this card, not change his current spending habits at all other than paying with his American Express card and get at least week's worth of free hotels every year after year. And he wouldn't be hitting that ATM machine all the time as he must be doing. You certainly don't want the ATM to be your friend.

Why Jets Football Fans Use NetFlix.com For DVD Movie Rentals

Here's another competitive reason why NetFlix is going to trump Blockbuster Online in the end.

Jet's fans (as in NFL football) are banding together and going all NetFlix purely for the reason that Blockbuster Online is associated with Wayne Huizenga who just happens to own the Miami Dolphins. "Huizenga repeated his business success [throughout his career] with Blockbuster Video, opening a handful of stores in 1985, and achieving status as the country's leading movie rental chain by 1994," according to Wikipedia.

For example, Josh Turnof, one of those crazy Jet's fans that dress up for games even when just watching them at home, is a prime example: "I haven't even stepped into a Blockbuster store since Dan Marino's (Miami Dolphin's QB) fake spike in 1999."

You can't compete against rabid NFL fans. It's probably one reason why Blockbuster's Online DVD Rental Service is finally piling on the features for their customers to stay competive with NetFlix.

Blockbuster DVD Movie Rental By Mail Service Is Now BETTER Than NetFlix

Since the start, Netflix dominated the DVD rental scene -- because they invented it. They had the head start to build out tons of distribution centers across the country so that any mailing would be close enough to your home that you'd get it pretty much the next day. When Walmart and Blockbuster.com started their own copycat DVD rental-by-mail services, customers experienced waits of 2-4 days because they were mailing to all customers from from 1 or 2 different centers in the country (and we live in a BIG country). In addition, Netflix stocked thousands of videos - much more than your local Blockbuster store, as well as the competitor's DVD's by mail movie services. If you did any compariso

Up to now, Blockbuster's retails stores have taken huge hits because of DVD's by mail rental programs cropping up as well as cable Pay Per View. Well, Blockbuster finally figure out a way to make their brick-and-morter presences into a competitive advantage against NetFlix.com: They let you return the DVD's you got in the mail to your local store *and* immediately take out another DVD to take home that same day *and* they'll ship you your next DVD rental in the mail so that you'll get it in a day or two. Immediate satisfaction plus some. Not bad, huh?

Blockbuster.com has been hitting the airwaves hard with TV commercials lately to promote their program. At the same price as NetFlix, there's now a tangible reason to try out Blockbuster's DVD Movie Mail Rental Program. Plus, Blockbuster has added 2 in-store movie rentals per month to the package, putting Blockbuster's Movie Rental Service over the top vs. Netflix. And if that's not enough, they've taken their discounted $9.99/1st month promotional offer and replaced it with a totally free trial offer that can be found in certain places.

If you use NetFlix, you should try the free Blockbuster.com trial and even do a head-to-head mailing speed competition between the two services. Having the option to go to the local store to get another video + 2 more free videos per month makes it a real serious contender to replace NetFlix.
